I continue to discover more duplicates like this record in my Beatles and Beatles-Related vinyl collection, so please check my other auctions for more vinyl that may be of interest to you.
In this auction:
· “WHATEVER GETS YOU THROUGH THE NIGHT” by John Lennon & The Plastic Ono Nuclear Band
· This is Apple Records P - 1874.
· This is a PROMOTIONAL SINGLE with MONO on the A-side and STEREO on the B-side.
· As you may know, PROMO RECORDS were released by record companies ONLY to the radio stations and DJs for airplay. They were pressed in very small/limited quantities and were not released for sale or made available to the general public.
· This record was issued in September of 1974.
· This APPLE PROMO RECORD is quite significant, as it was John Lennon’s ONLY SOLO #1 RECORD IN HIS LIFETIME!!!
· In fact, in November, 1974 John Lennon took to the stage at Madison Square Garden as a guest of Elton John because of this record. Elton had sung on “Whatever Gets You Through The Night” on Lennon’s “Walls and Bridges” LP and had made Lennon agree to join him live on stage should the record go to #1. As luck would have it, it did!!! (Thanks to Chris Ingham’s book, The Rough Guide to The Beatles, for this information.)
· Both the VINYL & the LABELS are in BEAUTIFUL NEAR MINT to MINT CONDITION!!! It is said that any record that has been handled cannot be graded any higher than Near Mint. However, I don’t see any evidence of handling of this record and can’t see a mark anywhere on it all, so I’ve graded it Near Mint to Mint.
· A Near Mint Apple Records stock sleeve is included.
· This is an EXTREMELY NICE & HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT JOHN LENNON & the Plastic Ono Band PROMO 45 RPM RECORD that would be an EXCELLENT ADDITION to anyone’s Beatles and/or vinyl collection!!!
FYI: I use the COVER/SLEEVE GRADES and RECORD GRADES listed and described on page 8 of Perry Cox’s Price Guide for the Beatles American Records. These grading Good+ (G+), Very Good Minus (VG-), Very Good (VG), Very Good+ (VG+), Near Mint Minus or Very Good++ (NM- or VG++), Near Mint (NM), Mint Minus (M-), and Mint (M or MT) to VISUALLY grade the 45s and picture sleeves I auction, so please know the descriptions of these grades before bidding. Please ask any questions BEFORE bidding. And please check my other auctions for other records you may want to add to your collection.
