Description
Paul McCartney Album "BAND ON THE RUN" ORIGINAL 1973 UK 1st Pressing "Factory Sample"!!!!
Released on the 7th December 1973!!!! This entered the charts on the 15th December 1973 where it reached the Number 1 slot and stayed in the charts for a total of One Hundred & Tenty Four weeks!!!!
This was the Fifth official EMI release by Paul McCartney and was credited to "Paul McCartney & Wings"!!!!
This Album took off very slowly, taking 7 months to reach N0.1 but ended up as their Biggest selling Album by far, staying in the UK charts for an incredible 124 weeks (over 2 years)!!!! It was the Best selling Album in Britain in 1974, and by the end of 1974 had sold Six Million copies Worldwide!!!!
The ORIGINAL L.P. contains all the words on one side of the Inner sleeve, plus a Poster of "Polaroid Snapshots"!!!!
This Album was Recorded at several different studios which were EMI's studios in Lagos, Ginger Baker's (of Cream fame) ARC studios (also in Lagos), Trident studios in London and the Orchestral Sounds arranged by Tony Visconti were added at AIR studios, London!!!!
The Recording sessions from the 1st-22nd September 1973 in Lagos produced all the Album tracks, plus "Helen Wheels" released seperately as a single, "Zoo Gang" (an instrumental theme for a T.V. show) issued as the B Side: to "Seaside Woman" and "Oriental Nightfish" later used as a Cartoon soundtrack.
As well as the Band, the Front Cover picture features Michael Parkinson, Kenny Lynch, James Coburn, Clement Freud, Christopher Lee and John Conteh!!!! Paul commissioned Gordon House and Storm Thorgerson to shoot a Promo for the Album, which they did featuring behind the scenes footage of the creation of the Album cover photograph. Never shown in Full anywhere, it was seen as a Backdrop on tour with Paul!!!!
Interestingly, the rear Album cover pictures on the standard U.K and U.S.A. editions Differ!!!!
Obviously this "Recording" is NOT one of Paul's "Rarest" Albums to Locate!!!! However what makes this a Very Collectable item is the "Factory Sample" sticker on the Label and the Condition!!!
Factory Samples were as a rule used on only 500 records off the Press!!!! These were intended for "Radio Disc Jockeys", "Record Executives", "Record Reviewers" and "EMI Employees", to help Promote the sales of each record!!!! These were NOT FOR SALE and should not have got to the General Public!!!!There are "Four" different types of Factory Sample Stickers"!!!! Type A: This is the First variation seen on The Beatles discs, and was in use from 1962 until around 1970. Type B: This is the Second variation, common from around 1970/1. Type C: This is the Third variation, common form around 1971 until roughly 1974. Type D: Fourth variation first starting to appear on some "Two Box LP's Sets" in 1974!!!!
The Matrix, Mother and Stampers are:
Side One: YEX-929-2. On the run out grooves are the letters RAA and the number 3.
Side Two: YEX-930-2. On the run out grooves are the letters RHT and the number 1.
CONDITION:
The Centre Labels to both sides are in "Superb" condition. Though when held up to a very strong light there are Very Minimal signs of Spindal Marks present to both sides but NONE that even remotely spoil their look!!!! They are both Spotless and Clean and all the lettering is Perfect with no signs of Rubbing!!!!
The "Factory Sample" sticker is on Side: One:!!!!
Side 1: The Vinyl still retains that Gloosy Look and has clearly been Very Well looked after which is reflected in the playback!!!! There are no Pops, Clicks or Jumps anywhere!!!! I play graded this on a Linn LP12 Sondek through a Linn System (which is very unforgiving). The Playback was "Superb"!!!! The record lays perfectly Flat with no Warping!!!!
Overall the Labels and Vinyl must grade as at least Excellent+!!!!
SLEEVE:
The Vinyl is housed in it's ORIGINAL "Company Sleeve"!!!! And is in overall Fantastic condition. The Spine is in Great Order with All of the writing Readable, there are just very slight Storage Knocks to the Top and Bottom. The opening Edges are Straight (again just slight storage knocks to the Top and Bottom)!!!! The Back is in near Perfect condition!!!! There are no Creases, Writing, Rips, Tears or Splits anywhere!!!!
I would easily grade the Sleeve as Excellent!!!!!
The Inner is also in Excellent+ condition!!!!
The Poster is Complete and Whole with no Writing, Rips, Tears or Splits, and the only Creases are where it was originally Machine Folded at the Factory. I would grade the Poster as Excellent!!!!
