PAUL McCARTNEY: COLD CUTS - 12" Vinyl Album. Record and Sleeve both in VNM Condition.
This album comes from my personal collection and is in excellent condition: 'Macca Brand, COLD CUTS, No Baloney!' On Red Club Sandwich label SP-11-A & SP-11B. Etched in deadwax; side A ; 'Cold Cuts A/MAC1980A - side B; Cold Cuts M/MAC1980B. Heavyweight shiny vinyl in excellent condition - there is a surface scuff across track 6 on side one - this does not affect the clarity or quality of the sound reproduction. Photo 6 gives the impression there is a white mark mid record on side 2 - this is only a trick of the light. The sleeve is also excellent with no 'record ringing' or scratches or scuffs.
Background History
An unusually prolific superstar, Paul McCartney averaged an album a year from 1970 to 1980 - not counting the live Wings Over America or Thrillington (the orchestral version of Ram. Equally remarkedly, eleven of his singles in this same period stood alone from albums. By 1980, not a year had gone by since 1962 without new McCartney music. But the new decade brought one event after another that shook the confidence of this most assured of stars - his imprisonment in Tokyo for marijuana possession, the collapse of his band Wings, and worst of all - the assassination of John Lennon. So, to fill an uncharacteristically barren release schedule, he resurrected a six year old project, now known as 'Cold Cuts'.
By Late 1974, McCartney's stock was at it's highest since the dissolution of The Beatles. That years Band on the Run was his third album with Wings but his first to score a hat trick of chart-topping positions in Britain, the U.S. and Australia. It was also the first to score near-unanimous favourable reviews - even from a harsh a critic as John Lennon "Band on the Run' is a great album" .....he told Rolling Stone. "It doesn't matter who's playing. You can call them Wings - but it's Paul McCartney music. And that's good stuff".
To Capitalise on this success, a budget priced collection called HOT HITZ & KOLD KUTZ was proposed - intended no doubt to appear in time for Christmas. There was an abundance of material from which to choose: the stand alone hits 'Another Day', 'Give Ireland Back to the Irish', 'Mary Had a Little Lamb', 'Hi, Hi, Hi', 'Live & Let Die' and 'Juniors Farm' - and there B sides; chose album cuts like 'Maybe I'm Amazed', 'Helen Wheels', 'Walking in the Park with Eloise'; and outtakes that - to judge from the ones that later appended to deluxe issues, could have included 'Suicide', 'A Love for You' and 'Mama's Little Girl'.
In October 1980, McCartney reunited with George Martin for the first time since 'Live & Let Die' to cut ' We All Stand Together' - an experience that went well enough for the pair to embark on what would ultimately become 1982s 'Tug Of War' album; however and prior to this, sessions in January 1981 turned out to be a stab at overdubbing on what was now known as Cold Cuts. Trimmed of instrumentals (such as reggae version of Wild Life's 'Tomorrow'), and cuts sung by Linda McCartney and Denny Laine that had reportedly featured in previous permentations, it boasted twelve tracks; the Ram out take 'A Love For You', 'My Carnival' (from Venus & Mars sessions), 'Waterspout' (London Town sessions), 'Night Out', 'Tragedy' and 'Mama's Little Girl' (all from Red Rose Speedway sessions), 'Robbers Ball' (from McCartney II), 'Cage' and 'Did We Meet Somewhere Before' (both from Back to the Egg), 'Hey Diddle' (originally from Ram sesions - but reworked in Nashville in 1974), 'Best Friend' ( a bluesy rocker originating from a 1972 Wings tour) and 'Same Time Next Year (originally written for 1978 movie of the same name - but subsequently rejected because it gave away too much of the plot!).
Fansite thatwouldbesomething.com observed that ; 'at least a half dozen tracks are equal to or better than the best of McCartney's legitimate output'. The album even acquired artwork, whose declaration 'No Baloney!' distinguished this incarnation of Cold Cuts from others issued as bootlegs. Subsequently however, the album was shelved again!!!!!!
