The Beatles – Please Please Me 1963 1st Press gold label LP with Dick James Mus Co production credits, Parlophone PMC 1202.
This is a lovely example of the 1st Pressing of the LP Please Please Me by The Beatles. It was released on the gold + black Parlophone label early in 1963 – PMC 1202. I bought this LP from its original owner who purchased it within two or three weeks of its release in 1963. By the look of it I don’t think it can have been played more than once or twice. There are no marks at all by the spindle hole and both labels are 100% clean and perfect. (I have taken pictures of the labels under two different light sources, and two of the pictures look a bit yellowy. As I say, the labels are absolutely perfect on both sides - jet black with bright gold print). There is a very faint M T tax code in raised letters by the spindle hole on side one. The tracks I Saw Her Standing There, Misery, Please Please Me, Do You Want To Know a Secret and There’s a Place have the early ‘Dick James Mus Co’ production credits on the labels. The Matrix numbers and stamper codes are Side One – XEX 421-1N 1 GR. Side Two – XEX 422-1N 1 T.Side one grades as EX+. There is a single very small scratch on the third track - Anna (Go To Him). I have just played it through and it can be heard as a very faint background ‘click’ for a very few revolutions. It is in the background and is certainly not obvious at all, and that was with me really listening out for it to be able to grade the record properly. Side two grades as Near Mint. The record is perfectly flat. The lined ‘Use Emitex’ inner-sleeve is in good clean and flat condition.
The cover grades as EX-. There are a couple of small problems, which I would not mention in any detail if this was any run-of-the-mill LP but in this case they need describing. The top left and bottom right corners have small bumps and includes some rubbing to the top left. There is a single tiny scuff / slight indentation about an inch to the top right of John’s head that has not broken the laminate and can only be seen if you hold it at an angle to the light. The back has no scribbles or stickers etc and is very clean. There is a small problem with the top flipback seam where I can see that the record must have been put away in an album box with others and the seam has got caught on another LP cover and it has caused a small piece to lift. This includes a couple of tiny nicks, but NO PAPER IS MISSING and although I am going to leave it as it is, it would not be hard to carefully glue it down again and make it pretty much as good as new. It needs mentioning but certainly is not serious. Along the bottom edge it states Printed and Made by Ernest J. Day & Co. Ltd, London, PMC 1202 PCS 3042. The “Photo: Angus McBean” on the front of the cover is in the bottom right corner with the P in Photo starting under the second S of Songs.
