Description

Here’s a fascinating piece of Beatles history! This is an original copy of “She Loves You”/ “I’ll Get You”, on the white Swan label with red print, number 4152. This single was widely counterfeited in the late 60s, but this is an original with”Mastering Reco-Art Phila.” stamped in the trail-off, along with machine stamped 1/8” tall letters. The vinyl grades VG+, plays well. “Don’t Drop Out” appears on the labels. In addition to being a rare 45, this copy has something special. There’s a bit of a story here, so please read on. The Beatles released three singles in America prior to December 1963, and all of them initially flopped. The first two were on the small Vee Jay label. When Vee Jay declined to release the third single, the Beatles’ management was forced to go to an even smaller label for distribution- hence the appearance of “She Loves You” on the Swan label. When I first found this 45, my initial record-collector instinct was to ponder how to remove that big ugly sticker on the A side label. But upon closer inspection, I realized that sticker tells quite a story. This 45 wasn’t specifically marked as a promotional copy, but it was definitely used at a radio station in 1963. It bears a date from the week the single was issued (September 10 1963). Below it are the words “Former Hit Bound”. In 1960s era Top 40 radio, a station would place brand new releases on a list called “Hitbounds”. It was a trial period to see if the listeners liked the song. From there, the song either moved into the Top 40 playlist, or the song disappeared into oblivion. In September of 1963, this record more than likely took the latter path. The general lack of groove wear on this copy attests to this fact. At any rate- five months after the release of this rare “flop” single, the Beatles appeared on the Ed Sullivan show, and the rest is history.
