Released in May/June 1969, "The Ballad of John and Yoko" is a fascinating piece of Beatles history. The song was recorded on April 14, 1969, by only John Lennon and Paul McCartney, as George Harrison and Ringo Starr were unavailable at the time. Paul played the drums, bass, and piano, while John handled the guitars and lead vocals. The track is a "musical journalism" piece documenting John and Yoko’s wedding and their famous "Bed-In" for peace. Interestingly, the song was banned by many US and UK radio stations (including the BBC) due to the lyrics "Christ, you know it ain't easy," which were considered controversial at the time. Despite the ban, it became the band's 17th UK #1 single. The B-side, "Old Brown Shoe," is a brilliant George Harrison composition that showcases his growing songwriting prowess and unique use of bass and guitar interplay.
