Description

One of the most iconic and sought-after albums in all of record collecting: The Beatles' "Yesterday"...And Today on Capitol Records, 1966, in its legendary "Butcher Cover" configuration. This is a genuine Third State example: the trunk cover pasteover has been consumer-peeled to reveal the original Robert Whitaker photograph beneath — John, Paul, George and Ringo in white smocks, draped with raw meat and dismembered baby doll parts. Capitol recalled and pasted over nearly every copy within days of the June 1966 release. The ones that survived - in any state - are the real thing.

This one is the real thing.

Full identification:

  • Pressing: Capitol T-2553, mono
  • Labels: Original 1966 black rainbow Capitol label, no subsidiary rim text, "(Recorded in England)" present, label matrix T-X-1-2553 / T-X-2-2553
  • Stamped runout Side 1: T-1-2553-G-18
  • Stamped runout Side 2: T-2-2553-F-17
  • Cover number: 6 (lower right, adjacent to RIAA seal) — confirming Los Angeles plant, mono pressing
  • Back cover: Capitol/EMI logos upper left, "High Fidelity Recording / Also Available in Stereo" upper right, three-factory pressing text (Scranton PA / Los Angeles CA / Jacksonville IL) at bottom

Condition — cover: Third State consumer peel. Significant paper loss on John's chest area. Peel ghosting and surface wear throughout the front. The canvas texture of the original butcher slick is intact and visible — the image is fully recognizable and complete. Original store sticker strip remains attached to right edge. Back cover shows age toning. Spine worn and illegible. Unrestored and unaltered since the peel.

Condition — vinyl: One significant deep scratch on Side 2, visible under light and likely to affect playback. Two minor additional surface marks. Grades VG–. Labels clean and intact.

Every detail has been documented for the serious collector. The deep scratch and rough peel are reflected in the opening bid. For the buyer who wants an authenticated, fully documented Third State mono Butcher Cover at a fair price for the condition, this is it.
