Second state pasteover Butcher ???
I am convinced it is..
This album was purchased new by my sister in law and has been in her possession ever since. Now that she no longer has a turntable, she is getting rid of all her albums and I snagged the three Beatles albums that she had. In doing a little research on EBay and several internet sites, I am convinced that this is what is known as a second state pasteover and therefore worth some money so I am selling it for her instead of keeping it.
Here are the reasons I believe it is a second state pasteover:
1. On the top and bottom left corners of the front, little teeny corners have been peeled back -- most likely by contact with other albums. On the bottom left, you can see a small slice of a different picture where the pasteover didn't cover completely. In looking at pictures of the original butcher picture, the colors are consistent with that part of the picture showing parts of John's pant leg and jacket sleeve.
2. The top right corner of the front also appears to have a pasteover, partially covering the text that is there. The text reads File under: The Beatles T2553. 3. The black vee of Ringo's sweater shows under the pasteover. When I first looked at the cover after seeing on a website that you were supposed to be able to see Ringo's black sweater, I was looking for a whole sweater and was disappointed not to find it, then I had my husband look at the cover, just telling him that there "might be something". He said that all he could see was a triangular dark shape. I went back to the website, read it more carefully and realized that that is exactly what we should be seeing as only a vee of the sweater shows under his white butcher's coat. I also noticed that what we are seeing is in the exact right place. I attempted to photograph this, but haven't been real successful. I will send as many pics of it to you as you want, but none of the photos show it as clearly as it really appears. It shows best looking at it from the side.
Here is some more info about the album: It is the Capitol recording, with an RIAA number of 6, which I believe means it was made in LA and makes it rarer than some others. The inner sleeve is the original yellow, with many pictures of other Capitol LPs. The album itself has a rainbow circle around the label.
The condition of the cover is very good, with a little damage to the bottom right of the front with a small slit on the bottom right edge -- probably caused by taking the album in and out. The front has a few scuff marks and the back shows scuff marks in the outline of the LP. There is also some slight damage to the bottom left of the back (some cardboard showing through).
The LP itself has a few scratches, but I played the track with the worst one and there was no skipping. The sound was good, especially after I turned off one of the speakers on my stereo. I presume that is because the LP is mono.
The yellow inner sleeve is also in very good condition, with one slight tear (hardly noticeable) on the back top.
But, for its age, it is in great shape and is one of the better second state butchers I have seen up for auction.
I have photos of the above mentioned damage and can email those if you want to see them.
Please email me any questions and I will answer them to the best of my ability. I am obviously no expert on this, but I am convinced this is a second state butcher pasteover cover.
