Description
THIS APPEARS ALL ORIGINAL and even in a faint pencil it says ORIGINAL COVER on the back. If you are a collector looking to ad a Butcher Cover to your collection here you go and this is the start of a VIP collection that was started in the early 1970's and there are some ultra special albums. The record condition does not look bad its not mint perfect but also considering it was played it does NOT show a lot of serious scratches or marks that I would say would not allow both sides of the LP to be played. The cover itself as pictured was peeled back and exposes parts of both images are seen and its not perfect by any means.
The "butcher cover" for The Beatles' US album Yesterday and Today sparked significant controversy in 1966 due to its graphic image of the band in butcher smocks surrounded by raw meat and doll parts. Originally, the band wanted to use the photo as their album cover, but Capitol Records, faced with strong negative reaction from distributors and retailers, ultimately rejected it. They then substituted the image with a more benign shot of the band in a steamer trunk. Here's a more detailed look at the history:
- The Initial Idea: The Beatles, along with photographer Robert Whitaker, created the controversial photo for a conceptual art project called "Somnambulant Adventure" in March 1966.
- Capitol's Rejection: The band wanted to use the photo for their US album Yesterday and Today, but Capitol Records initially agreed, they faced widespread distributor refusal due to its graphic nature, according to Beatles Music History.
- The "Second State" Cover: Capitol Records quickly replaced the original "butcher cover" with a steamer trunk photo, according to a post on Louder.
- The "Third State" Cover: Some later pressings of the album featured a "Third State" cover, which was a poorly executed attempt to cover the "Second State" steamer trunk photo, reports Every Record Tells a Story.
- Collector's Items: All three cover versions are now highly sought-after collector's items, with the original "butcher cover" being the most rare and valuable, according to Louder.
