Description
As you may know, both Mary Hopkin and Jackie Lomax were two of the first artists signed to the Beatles' new Apple Records label in 1968. On August 26, 1968, Apple Records in the UK released their first four singles introduced in a presentation packet entitled “OUR FIRST FOUR” that included: The Beatles (“Hey Jude”), Black Dyke Mills Band (“Thingumybob”), Mary Hopkin (“Those Were The Days”) and Jackie Lomax (“Sour Milk Sea”) 45s.
In this auction are TWO APPLE LPs BY TWO OF THE FIRST FOUR.
LP #1:
-
“POSTCARD” LP by Mary Hopkin
-
This is Apple Records ST – 3351.
-
This LP was released March 3, 1969.
-
The LP has “Mfd. By Apple Records, Inc.” in the perimeter print of the sliced-Apple label.
-
Mary Hopkin is a Welsh singer who was discovered by Paul McCartney. Her first hit single was “Those Were The Days” which is included on this, her first, LP.
-
The COVER IS in NEAR MINT (NM) CONDITION & STILL IN ITS ORIGINAL SHRINK WRAP. There are 2 tiny staple holes at the upper left corner where a price tag was probably affixed. The corners are nice. The shrink wrap on the rear has a small irregular-shaped 2-inch x 1-inch piece missing at the opening.
-
The primarily black front and rear cover slicks on this LP were NOTORIOUS for easily developing and showing ring wear; but, the shrink wrap has protected and prevented that from occurring on this copy for more than 55 years!
-
The VINYL is also in NEAR MINT (NM) CONDITION and was pressed at Capitol’s Scranton plant.
LP#2:
-
“IS THIS WHAT YOU WANT” LP by Jackie Lomax
-
This is Apple Records ST – 3354.
-
This LP was released May 19, 1969.
-
The LP has “Mfd. By Apple Records, Inc.” in the perimeter print of the sliced-Apple label.
-
Jackie Lomax was a Liverpool friend of George Harrison.
-
George Harrison wrote and produced “Sour Milk Sea”, and George, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton and Klaus Voorman all played on it, Lomax’s first Apple single.
-
“Sour Milk Sea” is included on this LP that was arranged and produced by George Harrison.
-
The COVER IS in NEAR MINT (NM) CONDITION & STILL IN ITS ORIGINAL SHRINK WRAP. There are a couple of VERY small snags/tears in the shrink wrap on the top edge above the letter “J” in “Jackie” and on the rear at bottom right under the “s” in “Records”. The corners are nice and sharp.
-
This LP cover, with primarily black front and rear cover slicks, was NOTORIOUS for easily developing and showing ring wear; but, the shrink wrap has protected and prevented that on this copy for more than 55 years!
-
The VINYL is also in NEAR MINT (NM) CONDITION and was pressed at Capitol’s Scranton plant.
-
This LP also comes with its ORIGINAL CUSTOM INNER SLEEVE that lists the song tracks, musicians and credits. It has a 2-inch split on the bottom. (This Custom Inner Sleeve is often missing from copies of this LP.)
TWO VERY NICE COPIES of these EARLY APPLE RECORDS ISSUES if you’re looking for them for your vinyl collection!
