Description

In this auction:

  • THE POPE SMOKES DOPE” LP by David Peel & The Lower East Side

  • This LP is Apple Records SW – 3391.

  • It was released April 17, 1972 and was produced by John Lennon and Yoko Ono.

  • David Peel’s raw, acoustic “street rock” with lyrics about marijuana and “bad cops” appealed mostly to “hippies” and “radicals” of the day.

  • This LP was NOT a big seller for Apple Records. Two cuts from this LP were issued on a Promotional 45 Single (“F Is Not A Dirty Word” b/w “The Ballad of New York City”) but it was not released as commercial issue.

  • This LP was also originally banned in many countries and is now sought after by collectors worldwide.

  • It is the follow-up companion LP to David Peel’s “HAVE A MARIJUANA” LP that was released in 1968 on the Elektra Records label.

  • This LP contains such cuts as “Everybody’s Smoking Marijuana”, “F Is Not A Dirty Word”, “The Hippie From New York City”, “The Ballad of New York City/John Lennon-Yoko Ono”, “The Ballad of Bob Dylan”, “The Pope Smokes Dope” and 6 other cuts.

  • The COVER is in VERY STRONG VG to VG+ CONDITION. The front and rear covers show light to moderate signs of handling and wear primarily on the edges of the dark circles. There is a 2 ½ -inch split (repaired) in the middle of the bottom seam. There is NO flaking on the edges or spine, NO stains, and NO writing on the cover. The corners are in nice condition. There is slight aging/foxing.

  • The VINYL IS in VERY STRONG VG to WEAK VG+ CONDITION with some very light/slight surface hairlines/scuffs. (Very Light and None are “feel-able”.) The vinyl was pressed at Capitol Records’ LA Plant.

  • The LP also comes with its ORIGINAL CUSTOM PHOTO/LYRICS INNER SLEEVE that has a couple of light corner creases probably from insertion into the cover at the time of production. It has retained it’s mostly-red color on one side. There are splits on three sides of this custom inner sleeve: a 3-inch split in the middle of a side edge, a 4-inch split in the middle of the other side edge and a 3 ½ -inch in the middle of the bottom edge. (This Custom Inner Sleeve is often missing from used copies of this LP now.)

A RARE or CERTAINLY VERY UNCOMMON APPLE LP to add to YOUR vinyl collection!
