In this auction:

• “THE SONGS LENNON AND McCARTNEY GAVE AWAY” LP by The Original Artists

• This LP is EMI Records NUT 8 which is printed on the labels and on the rear of the cover. On the rear of the cover is also printed OC 054-07 003.

• It was issued in 1979.

• This LP is a compilation LP containing the original artist recordings of songs composed by John Lennon and Paul McCartney in the 1960s that they had decided not to release as Beatles songs.

• The rear cover and labels have “STEREO” printed, but 9 of the 20 cuts on this LP are in MONO (Monaural).

• It is truly amazing how many Lennon-McCartney compositions were given to other recording artists to perform. I read that there were several reasons why this occurred. There were:

  1. songs that the group ultimately decided not to release.

  2. songs that The Beatles decided were unsuitable for the group at the outset and did not even attempt to record themselves.

  3. songs that had been intentionally written for other artists.

• Their manager, Brian Epstein, also managed other recording artists that included: Gerry and the Pacemakers, Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas, the Fourmost, the Cyrkle, Cilla Black and Tommy Quickly.

• Epstein encouraged The Beatles to supply some of their songs decided to be unsuitable for The Beatles to fellow artists, several who were also managed by Epstein or were friends of The Beatles like the duo Peter & Gordon.

• Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas had four hits with Lennon–McCartney songs: “I’ll Keep You Satisfied”, “From A Window”, “Bad To Me” and “I’ll Be On My Way”. (These songs are included on this LP.)

• Peter Asher, of the duo Peter & Gordon, was the brother of Paul McCartney’s girlfriend, Jane Asher. Paul lived for a period of time in London with the Asher family. To Peter & Gordon went “World Without Love” (one of their hits), “Woman”, “Nobody I Know“and “I Don’t Want To See You Again”. (These songs are also included on this LP.)

• John Lennon wrote the first two singles for The Fourmost, “I’m In Love” and “Hello Little Girl”. (And these songs are included on this LP.)

• Three notable songs written by Paul McCartney when The Beatles were together and given to other artists to record that are not in this compilation LP are: “Goodbye” recorded by Mary Hopkin, “Come and Get It” recorded by Badfinger and “Thingumybob” recorded by the Black Dyke Mills Band.

• The COVER is in VERY STRONG VG+ CONDITION. The cover is thin, typical of UK covers, and laminated on the front. It was produced by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. Only some very light wear near the top of the front cover and some small light surface creases near the spine keep me from grading the cover Near Mint.

• The VINYL is in NEAR MINT CONDITION.

• This record comes in its correct and original EMI UK inner paper sleeve with the EMI Records Ltd address and “Made in Great Britain” printed on it.

A GREAT LP that brings to you 20 compositions by John Lennon and Paul McCartney that were not recorded by The Beatles that provides more insight into the works of this song-writing duo.

Fair (F), Good Minus (G-), Good (G), Good+ (G+), Very Good Minus (VG-), Very Good (VG), Very

 Good Plus (VG+), Near Mint Minus (NM-), Near Mint (NM), Mint Minus (M-), and Mint (M or

MT) to VISUALLY GRADE this LP, so please know the descriptions of these grades before bidding.
