Description
Begin to Feel
by Russ Saul
Scarce anonymous '70s country-pop album
on a notable "tax scam" label
Los Angeles: Tribute Records, 1977. LR-1008. Stereo LP. Original pressing. VG+ in Good+ jacket. Light wear to LP, plays OK. Sleeve well-rubbed, top hinge starting to go.
A very heartfelt, rough-around-the-edges but inspired collection of country songs from an unknown artist whose work was issued (just barely) as a write-off by a label created for tax purposes. The artist's name was given as "Russ Saul" but his real name is unknown. He probably had sent demos out and had this album pressed without his knowledge, as was the habit of many tax scam labels. The mastering job is abysmal and the recording quality isn't great, but somehow, a number of these songs manage to shine. Perhaps the best, "Just to Say Goodbye," was reissued as part of the Enjoy the Experience compilation that accompanied the book of the same name. "Leaving Has Hurt" was covered by The Zip Code Revue. "I Need Him" was covered by the Zip Code Rapists in the early '90s. Both songs should have been hits. But they weren't. Oh well. If you're looking for this album, you probably should just buy it. Quickly.
