7” Shellac Recorded on October 1, 1898

 

The Berliner Gramophone disc was the world’s first example of a flat playable record – before this there were only cylinders. Any surviving discs are important historical artifacts and incredibly rare documents of early recorded sound.

 

This is disc number 404XX, and features comedian John Yorke Atlee doing a short funny song. This is a signed disc, signed with an etching pen above the spindle hole. These Laughing records are very popular with collectors, and this one is in very nice playable condition.

The record grades at V+ to E- on the VJM scale (or G+ to VG- on the Goldmine scale) with obvious surface wear, but no deep scratches and it looks to be completely playable.  Please note that we are not able to play Berliner discs, so we are not able to play grade this disc.
