Description

This auction is for E. Berliner's Gramophone 7” 78rpm Record No. 612 "Casey As Judge" a humerus dialogue by Russell Hunting recorded March 3, 1895. The name of the artist, song title and date are handwritten or etched below the spindle hole. The Company Name and patent information above the spindle hole.  There is a light surface crack or defect that extends across most of the back side of the record but it does not go through to the playing side.  I tried to show the crack / defect in image 4 but it does not show up well.   The record is structurally sound.   I have listened to the record and it plays fine with no skips or harsh noise.  As with all Berliner's - there is obviously surface and background noise, including ticks and high level of hiss.  Because of the higher background noise and the artist accent you must listen more closely to hear the story.  The record has small scratches, scuffing, groove wear as well as some small indentations or what might be called 'dimples' in the grooves.  This is considered to be pretty common or normal wear for a record that was recorded more than 115 ago.

German-American inventor Emile Berliner invented the first circular, non-cylinder, playing discs with recorded sound in the late 1880s. These fairly flat-edged black, circular platter-like discs are now commonly known as records. By 1895 he had financing available for the E. Berliner's Gramophone Company, which produced the discs from 1895-1899. These historic recordings, which are now over 115-years old are considered extremely rare and collectible, with some being one-of-a-kind recordings due to the process in which they were recorded and duplicated.

Please review the images carefully for condition.  I am listing several Berliner’s so if you are interested please take a look.  Shipping to the US will be $4.00, Canada $12.00 and all other countries $18.00.  If you purchase more than one record please request and invoice.  Thanks for your interest and email if you have any questions.
