7” Shellac Recorded on July 30, 1897
The Berliner Gramophone disc was the world’s first example of a flat playable record – before this there were only cylinders. Any surviving discs are important historical artifacts and incredibly rare documents of early recorded sound.
This is disc number 1759, and features the baritone Steve Porter performing the old hymn. Disk information in the center of the record is printed, not hand-written with a scratch pen.

The record grades at G- to G on the VJM scale with a few small needle-drops that look like they will play through with ticks or pops, and a few small spots of graying that may produce light surface noise but should play straight through. It has some lighter surface marks, and the dimpled surface that is common in these discs - they were part of Berliner records when they were made and the sound groove plays straight through the dimples. Please note that we are not able to play Berliner discs, so we are not able to play grade this disc.
