7” Shellac Recorded on April 18, 1896
The Berliner Gramophone disc was the world’s first example of a flat playable record – before this there were only cylinders. Any surviving discs are important historical artifacts and incredibly rare documents of early recorded sound.
This is disc number 993Z, and features John Myers doing a popular song of the time. The “Z” in the catalog number on this recording does not classify it as a repress, but rather as a re-recording of the same song by Mr. Dan W Quinn on disc 993 (without the suffix). Other artists recorded the song under the same catalog number with the suffixes of –V and –YY as well. The Berliner cataloging system was very convoluted in the Early Series; for more info visit the Library Of Congress page on Berliner discs here. This record is a first pressing for John Meyer’s version, and is in very nice playable condition. Like many of the early discs, this one is signed with an etching pen “J.W. Myers” towards the bottom of the label area.
