Description

ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful 2LP box set – a truly fine collector’s copy – from Deutsche Grammophon (423 601-1, German pressing, stereo, booklet/libretto included) features Leonard Bernstein’s provocative account of Puccini’s La Boheme, recorded ‘live’ at the Academia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Rome during May and June 1987 with the Coro e Orchestre dell’Academia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and a wonderful line-up of young American singers. The cast included:

Mimi – Angelina Reaux
Musetta – Barbara Daniels
Rodolfo – Jerry Hadley
Marcello – Thomas Hampson
Schaunard – James Busterud
Colline – Paul Plishka
Benoit – Joseph McKee
Alcindoro – Gimi Beni
Parpignol – Don Bernardini
Sergente dei doganieri – Paul Kreider
Un doganiere – James Ramlet

There were those who carped at the quality of the singing, but Bernstein brings it altogether, visionary conducting – certainly the orchestral score has never sounded more beautiful than this. Perhaps not a reference version, but a very special one. For this issue, DG used the same booklet/libretto as was issued for the CD box set. It is 290 pages in length. There are extensive notes on the music, a touching reminiscence on Bernstein’s La Boheme by the producer Hanno Rinke, a detailed plot synopsis, and full libretto in Italian, German, English, and French. Although one might wish for a full-size booklet, at least DG provided a lavish one, albeit sized for the CD box set. The all-American cast shines for Bernstein, for Puccini.

CONDITION:
The condition of the box is MINT. There are no flaws to speak of and the box appears as new – a truly lovely collector’s copy.

The condition of the 290-page booklet/libretto is near-MINT. Two interior pages were once folded down wrongly, but otherwise the booklet appears as new.

The condition of the 2 LPs is MINT throughout – again, lovely collector's copies.
