It took a great deal of soul searching to finally put this extremely rare survivor from Bessie Smith's final recording session up for auction, including her very last recording, but here it is. This really beautiful and Strong playing E+ Condition Okeh 78rpm Blues/Jazz record, recorded on November 24th, 1933 in New York, and featuring the 4th from the last, and very final recording of the Empress of the Blues, Bessie Smith. Joining her as backup for this session were Jazz Legends, Benny Goodman on Clarinet, Jack Teagarden on Trombone, Chu Berry on Tenor Saxophone, Buck Washington on Piano, Bobby Johnson on Guitar, and Billy Taylor on String Bass. The Selections are (152577) Do Your Duty composed by Wilson and Bessie's Very last side (152580) Down in the Dumps also composed by Wilson.This is Okeh 8945 retaining its original glossy shine and plays strong (See photos and Grading below). . My grading system is simple
M I was transported back in time to a record store and purchased new stock and returned to 2016.
M- It looks like new old stock but I can't prove it.
E+ It looks and plays really fantastic, visual grading under light detected minimal hard to see scuffs and maybe some tiny surface scratches
E It has been obviously been handled and played a number of times, may have a few minor scuffs and surface scratches as you would find on most records of this vintage, but still plays really exceptionally well.
E- , quite a few signs of scuffing and other surface blemishes and scratches along with noticeable but not distracting surface noise but still enjoyable .
G+ A serious collector would turn his nose up at it, but a beginner would jump in, sound quality far from great, starting to fade much more gray and little gloss left, and almost ready for the Old record retirement home.
G Been through a war and looks like it was played 100's of times with worn steel needle, A wall hanger or target practice item, or for those who just wanted to say they have one.
