Big Bill (Broonzy) + Don Byas Quartet, Hub 3003 Please Believe/Why did You BLUES

Up for sale is a scarce 78 rpm shellac 10 inch record, with a couple of great blues songs, composed and sung by a legendary blues singer who is backed by a talented jazz quartet.
The two songs on this record are credited to "Big Bill", undoubtedly a reference to "Big Bill Broonzy".  The vocals are credited to "Little Sam", but my research indicates that "Little Sam" was yet another name for "Big Bill Broonzy".  Broonzy (born Lee Conley Bradley in 1903) got his start playing country blues at "rent parties" in the 1920s.  During the 1930s and 1940s, he transitioned to a more urban blues style.  In the 1950s, he returned to the folk blues tradition and became a leading figure in the American folk music revival of that decade.  Broonzy died in 1958.
Don Byas was born in 1912.  He was classically trained on violin and piano and was initially an alto sax player, switching to tenor sax after moving to the West Coast in 1933.  Byas is most known as a bebop stylist and - over the years - played with such luminaries as Lionel Hampton, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Art Blakey, and Dizzy Gillespie.  Shortly after recording the Hub record I am selling, Byas was selected 2nd as tenor saxophonist in the Esquire Magazine All-American Awards.  In September, 1946, Byas toured Europe as part of Don Redman's Big Band.  It was the first civilian American big band to tour the continent in the post-WWII era.  Byas remained in Europe as an expatriate, not performing in the US again until the 1970 Newport Festival.  He died (in Amsterdam) in 1972.

The Don Byas Quartet consisted of:  Don Byas (tenor sax); John Levy (bass); Slick Jones (drums); and Kenny Watts (piano).  Each of the sidemen had a distinguished career of his own.  For example, Watts was part of the original George Shearing Quintet and would go on to become the first African-American personal manager in jazz.  He was inducted into the International Jazz Hall of Fame in 1997.
