Description
Cheap Thrills is the second studio album by the American psychedelic rock band . It was released on the Columbia Records label in August 1968. It was the bands final album before lead singer Janis Joplin left to start her solo career. Producer John Simon incorporated recordings of crowd noises to give the impression of a live album. Only “Ball And Chain” was actually recorded live. It was from a concert at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom on April 13, 1968. Cheap Thrills was a huge critical as well as commercial success. It peaked at #1 for eight non consecutive weeks on Billboard’s Top LP’s chart in 1968. The album features three cover songs in “Ball And Chain”, “Summertime” and “Piece Of Ny Heart”. The album’s gatefold cover art was by underground cartoonist Robert Crumb. It ranks #9 on Rolling Stone’s list of 100 Greatest Album Covers.
