Description

Bill Bissett & The Mandan Massacre Psych LP Awake in the Red Desert

This is an ultra rare 33 rpm LP record titled “Awake in the Red Desert” by Bill Bissett & The Mandan Massacre.  Bill Bissett was born in Halifax, but settled in Vancouver and became known as the “Godfather of Canadian Poetry” - Jack Kerouac called Bissett “one of the great poets”.  He was the target of a censorship campaign by a Conservative member of the House of Parliament in 1977, who cited his work as “disgusting and pornographic”.

The record is hard to describe.  It features Bissett speaking his poetry in a “concrete” spoken word style, part Eastern Mysticism, part Shamanistic, part rant, part slam, part beat, certainly psychedelically influenced, with raw sounding background sounds and music.  I guess “speaking” isn’t really accurate because it’s more performance oriented with verbal accentuations put to striking effect.  Whatever, this recording is certainly a testament to the time - listening to it puts one right back to 1968, but at its most fringe-like mystical Hippie head space.

I’ve listened to the record and have cleaned it with the Disc Doctor’s Miracle Record Cleaner.  Visually, the vinyl has light scuffing, a few light scratches and a large spot on the fourth track of side one that doesn’t sound at all.  There are some audible ticks particularly on cut 2 of side 1 and the beginning of side 2, but most of the rest of the record is fairly clean.  I guess that I’d have to grade it as VG due to the ticks at the beginning of the sides, but overall it is more of a VG+. This is such a rare record that some background noise should be tolerated - this is still a very listenable record.  The cover rates a NM-, the minus due to a bit of yellowing to the edges, a function of the type of cardboard used and age.

This is an ultra rare pressing and a bit of a treat - not everyone’s cup of tea, but certainly an important testament to the late 60s.......please check my other auctions for high quality and hard to find Canadian poetry LPs....

Shipping

Canadian buyers, please note that although we offer shipping through Champlain, NY for our American customers, we are a registered business located in Canada and must therefore charge applicable GST/HST/PST to Canadian buyers - please read further to understand our shipping methodology and note all costs so that there is no misunderstanding when rating shipping costs post-sale.

I ship to my US clients through USPS services as long as the value of the item does not exceed $200. For items that sell for over $200.00, I must ship to my U.S. clients using Canada Post. This is due to restrictions outlined in the North American Free Trade Agreement, chapter 3.21.  I am located in Canada but I have a carrier service to bring my parcels directly across the border on either Tuesday or Wednesday to be shipped out of the USPS postal outlet in Champlain, N.Y. In addition to the actual shipping cost, I do charge a $3.00 handling fee to help offset the cost of this special US service and new packaging for this piece. Please note that even with the handling fee that it is less expensive and is a quicker service than using Canada Post.

To my Canadian clients, I use Canada Post for shipping, as I am based in Canada - legally, I am not permitted to ship to you through the US, so do not rely on the US shipping calculator for costs.

To my International clients I can ship by either Canada Post or by USPS (in order to use USPS for intl. clients, the items must sell for under $200.00).

Please feel free to write with any inquiries in regards to cost of shipping to you.

Payment

Because I have a scheduled pick-up on either Tuesday or Wednesday, I would require your Paypal payment by Monday at 5:00 p.m., Eastern Standard Time.

BUYER PAYS SHIPPING - PLEASE DO NOT PAY UNTIL I CONTACT YOU AFTER THE AUCTION to avoid error. The reason for this is that package sizes and weights are estimates only as we cannot fully package items before they are sold. Please e-mail us for a shipping quote or wait until after the auction for a precise shipping cost. Our auctions end on Sunday evening, so I will be in touch with the correct invoice on Sunday evening or by the latest Monday morning, after we have had the chance to carefully package your item.

I would request any client to get in touch with me upon winning an item, who is not able to pay by Monday at 12:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, so I can get an idea of when to expect your payment.

PLEASE TAKE NOTE: CANADIAN RESIDENTS PAY GST/HST and QUEBEC RESIDENTS PAY BOTH THE GST AND PST TAX.

Terms of Sale

Being auctions, we do not accept returns unless an item has been significantly not as described.  We describe very thoroughly, both with photos and text, but in the case that an item has been misrepresented, we will accept a return for full refund, including shipping costs.

International customers, please do not ask us to falsify customs documentation:

"Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping charges. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding / buying. These charges are normally collected by the delivering freight (shipping) company or when you pick the item up - do not confuse them for additional shipping charges. We do not mark merchandise values below value or mark items as "gifts" - US and International government regulations prohibit such behavior."
