Description
From the estate of Milt Gabler, founder of Commodore Records, comes a rare test pressing for the 12" release of Billie Holiday's self-titled record on Commodore FL 30,008. The white-label disk, hand-dated "3-21-59" and "11-10-59" is in near-new condition, perhaps played once. The matrix numbers and other identifying marks in the run-off of Side 2 are identical to the commercial release; however, the matrix number on Side 1 of the test pressing is "FL 81", but the commercial release shows "FL 81A2". Also included is an original copy of Commodore FL 30,008 in near-new condition, also from the Milt Gabler collection. It was Gabler who took the risk of recording Billie's Strange Fruit after Columbia had rejected it because of the lyric's racial/political content.
