Description
Southern trees bear a strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.
Pastoral scene of the gallant south,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh,
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh.
Here is fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop,
Here is a strange and bitter crop.
The horror which humans have inflicted on other humans came, comes, and will come with variety,
In the name of hate, greed, righteousness, and more so, entertainment.
In 1939 Billie Holiday stood up and pushed back with a song;
a kind of entertainment you can feel on the inside, the kind which is necessary, to remind us of what we've done, are doing, and will do to eachother, just incase, we'd like to stop.
