Description
This is a rare reference acetate of the alternate takes from Billy Bang’s “Sweet Space”, originally recorded in l979 and issued on Anima 12741. The acetate was purchased from Billy Bang in l985. The performances differ in timing and content from the issued material and, in one instance, a title has changed. The labels read, Side One: 1. A PEBBLE IS A SMALL ROCK (dedicated to Mr and Mrs Irving Stone) 11: 46 (issued timing is 16:47), 2. BALLAD FOR LOLITA LEBRON 5:22 (issued as MUSIC FOR THE LOVE OF IT 5:50); Side Two: 1. LOWESKI FOR FRANK – T.F.R. 13:26 (issued timing is 12:55); 2. SWEET SPACE 4:20 (issued timing is 5:10). The playing surfaces appear to be in excellent condition, with no visible groove wear, though Side Two has a few superficial scuffs, handling marks. An audio sampling reveals surface noise that might be caused either by normal oxidation of the acetate (some of which can be removed or reduced with a Kodak fluid. See Internet for details and procedure) or by using a stylus that more closely matches the shape of the original cutting head. A copy of the original commercial issue is included.
