Description
The great Billy Higgins, who you’ve probably heard bang the drums if you’re a casual jazz listener. Billy Higgins was THE session guy, meaning he’d rarely leave the studio (sessions) because of vacancies in other groups for drummers that could (and 99% of the time WOULD) be filled by him.
This is his third attempt (first successful) with him as bandleader. I believe he does an exceptional job, too. Higgins employs a lot of the same style / techniques as he does on the Eastern Rebellion projects with Cedar Walton, Sam Jones, Clifford Jordan, and George Coleman. This is that ethereal, spiritual, comfy vibe that isn’t too intensely technical and USUALLY has a track whose title pays homage to the one and only Trane (A2 is called ‘John Coltrane’).
Mr. Billy Higgins is a top notch debut as bandleader and pulls off a solid post-bop / modal sound.
