Bishop Smallwood Edmond Williams was the founder of the Bible Way Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ World-Wide. He was a prominent figure in the Civil Rights Movement, advocating for desegregation and social justice.
Early Life and Education:
Williams was born in Lynchburg, Virginia, and later moved to Columbus, Ohio. He overcame a childhood stutter and graduated from American Bible College.
Ministry and Church Founding:
He was ordained as a minister in the Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ and later founded the Bible Way Church in 1927. Under his leadership, the church grew significantly, expanding to over 350 churches with a membership of over 100,000.
Civil Rights Activism:
Williams was a vocal advocate for civil rights. He urged President Truman to abolish segregation in Washington, DC, and led protests to desegregate schools. He was also a strong voice for the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1963.
Social Justice and Community Support:
Williams used his platform to lift other Black voices, supporting the campaigns of Jesse L. Jackson and Eleanor Holmes Norton. He is remembered for his perseverance, respect, and support for the community.
