Bitch Magnet, Ben Hur, vinyl LP

After the ingratiating pop-grunge of "Umber", Bitch Magnet produced a strange progressive-grunge album, filled with elaborate song structures. Fierce but far from free-wheeling, the constant gear changes result in an album that takes several listens to really get to grips with and is more intellectual than visceral in its effect. There was a lot of this in the air at the time, so a true reflection of a phase the American alt-rock scene went through, perhaps as a reaction to growing media interest and the commercial success of Nirvana and Sonic Youth. Grunge nerds will go crazy, those looking for an instant mosh-fix may do better elsewhere.
