Here’s a slight change of gear. Instead of our usual offerings of Grand Opera and great Classical Vocals from the “Golden Era” we now present a few “BANJOS FOR BADGERS” which consist of a bunch of early Banjo Ragtime Pre-Jazz and Novelty records.
They were recorded in the 1900s and the 1910s.
Here's one! It's the celebrated banjo pioneer Olly Oakley on an amazingly clean and tidy 10” Black G&T “Chinese Patrol” G.C. 6380 mx 3453-r.
Oakley (real name James Sharpe) was a Brummie, and recorded hundreds of zither-banjo tunes of all types for a bewildering array of labels. To make the collector’s life even more difficult, he also recorded under numerous pseudonyms like Signor Cetra, Fred Turner, Jack Sherwood, Frank Forrester, Mr F Curtis, Tim Holes and several others.
Basically, if you find a banjo record from the turn of the century (he recorded from the 1890’s to the 1930’s) it’s probably him.
If it ain’t him, it’s probably John Pidoux, or maybe Emil(e) Grimshaw(e).
This Black Label 10” G&T was recorded on April 9th 1903 and features piano accompaniment, possibly played by Fred Gaisberg.
Olly plays dazzlingly, but hits a terrific clinker of a wrong note after about two and a half minutes, just before the final flourish.
Even though it’s 120 years old, this is an amazingly clean record, and it plays amazingly well.
