One reason the album became so important is guitarist Tony Iommi's decision to tune his guitar lower than usual. The heavier, darker sound that resulted became a blueprint for countless metal bands that followed. Iommi originally experimented with lower tuning partly because it made playing easier after the industrial accident that damaged his fingertips.
