Description
This is an early UK press copy of the Black Sabbath album from 1971 Master of Reality - matrix number 6360050.
The stampers are at odds compared to those featured on Discogs for 1st pressings, although they do appear to indicate something early. They are as follows :
Side A - 1 Y // 1 (inverted triangle) 420 12 7 Side B - 2 Y // 1 (inverted triangle) 420 12 29
The cover is embossed but unfortunately has not been stored well, as the box style it was released in is now mostly flat, which has also affected the embossing. To help I have put a stiff card in the box to try and give it support and revive it's shape, and the record itself has been kept separate. The cover is still glossy and the title is raised, but there are many creases and the top opening has a rip in the middle. Please see pictures. Overall a Good maybe Good minus I would say, being cautious.
The labels show a little discolouring and there is a small signature on the 'A' swirl side. However, the vinyl is thick, with no warping and only a very small amount of spindle wear.
There is no poster with this copy.
The vinyl has been professionally cleaned on a Moth II record cleaning machine, which has not only given it a good sheen but has enhanced the punchy and dynamic sound. There is a mark on the swirl side of the vinyl which looks like a scratch, which I have highlighted in one of the pictures. However, although I don't know what caused it, it seems to be more of a scuff line and in no way effects the sound. Apart from that, visually just a couple of small wispy lines that do not effect play. I would say this album plays at excellent with the minimal normal background noise in the run-in/run-ot, in between tracks and in the quieter moments. A few pops and clicks that are nothing to worry about, and it still retains its full and engaging sound. It is not easy to be clear about this as listening to vinyl is a subjective experience. What may be acceptable to one may not be to another, and it will also depend on the quality of the equipment the vinyl is being played on. I think perfection is like the Holy Grail that does not exist, but if you are in anyway unsure about my description please do not bid, . Personally I am comforted by the warmth of a little "sparkle" in the background, as my 9 year old grandson describes it, and would listen to any vinyl over and above the perfectly silent but clinical cold sound of a CD. In my opinion, this album grades overall as a Very Good + to Ex for the media.
Although not a perfect example, this is still a good starting point for an upgrade at a later date. Whoever buys this album should enjoy listening to the great sound, and crank it up to number 11!!!.
I have tried to give a full, honest, and fair appraisal of this product as best I can, but if you have any questions please let me know?
