Format: LP, 33&1/3 RPM Type: Test Pressing
Label: Warner Brothers CatNo: BS 2822 Date: July 28th, 1975
Up for auction is a test pressing of Black Sabbath's (Bill Ward, Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler) sixth long-player: Sabotage. Often lauded as having some of the most ground-pounding cuts ever to be carved into vinyl in the 1970s, this comes with a timing sheet, and you can listen to Ozzy and Bill play, "Blow on a Jug," immediately following The Writ on side 2. This test pressing is housed in a generic white cover. The disk itself has generic Columbia Pressing Plant labels - this was pressed at Columbia Records Pressing Plant in Santa Maria, California. There are a few spindle tracks on side 2, and the vinyl exhibits a few surface marks variously on both sides, but retains its glossy sheen. It has a bit of a "wave" on one part of the outer edge. My turntable tracks the grooves regardless, and it goes away about halfway into, "Hole in the Sky". I grade the disk as VG.
Test pressings in the 1970's were made in small batches, typically three or four, but sometimes ten or fifteen. They are not promotional records; they were specifically made so the final product could be reviewed one last time before full production was green-lighted. The immediacy, clarity, and dynamism of the music is on a higher level than a well-made stock, or even promo, pressing.
The word, "rare," gets thrown about quite often on auction websites, probably more than it should be. But, different people have different definitions of what it means. In the realm of collectible records, a test pressing is rare, by anyone's definition.
If you bid on this test pressing of Sabotage, you will be bidding on a rare, very collectible, and fantastic-sounding record.
