The Roland Rennie Collection

Coming up for the foreseeable future, is a record collection that is quite unique. It is the personal collection of the late great Mr. Roland Rennie who was the managing director at Polydor records in the UK during the 1960's and 1970's. There are some unique records, including 7 inch singles and LP's, along with Acetates, Demo's/Promo's and Factory sample records. Most are very early issues, if not the first to be produced. All of the main Polydor artists are present, including international and UK labels connected to Polydor.

In 1950, a young man named Roland Rennie joined EMI records in Hayes, Middlesex, UK. Roland quickly grew with the company and saw its success mushroom manyfold during the late 1950's and early 1960's.

During his 12 years at EMI, he held many positions and eventually became the right hand man to EMI managing director, L.G. Wood in 1959, and was closely involved with major affiliation switches by major American firms. He oversaw the changes from British Decca to EMI and of Liberty and United records. His experience would put him in the top 6 of most knowledgeable executives in the industry at that time.

In 1962, Roland was a member of the team reponsible for the conception of the 'Stateside' label, which became the outlet in the UK and many other countries for: Scepter, Vee Jay, Diamond, Swan, Laurie; and a dozen other U.S. ensigns.

In addition, under instruction from Sir George Martin, Roland was also the person responsible for The Beatles' entrance onto the American stage, and was directly involved in negotations for them to appear on the Ed Sullivan show for the first time.

In 1965, he left EMI to take up the position of managing director at Polydor records in the UK, and directly oversaw the signings to the label of: The Who, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Bee Gees, Sonny & Cher, Wilson Pickett, Ben E King, Otis Redding, The Drifters, Joe Tex, Patti and her Belles, Don Covay, Barbara Lewis and Soloman Burke, to name but a few.

On offer today, a very good plus copy of the 1970 UK stereo 12" Vinyl debut Lp by Black Sabbath titled "Black Sabbath" on the black and white Vertigo swirl label.

Side 1 condition:

Side 1 plays through beautifully with no jumps or sticks or load pops. There is some light background noise here and there, mostly during quieter sections, but the quality of the vinyl still remains generally free of major background noise. 8/10.

The surface of the vinyl is very good plus with 2 or 3 hairlines on the surface. The shine of the vinyl is exceptional with no dirt or greasy marks. 8/10

The Vertigo swirl label on side 1 is in very good plus condition, 8.5/10, with the signature of 'Rennie' and only some light discolouration around the centre hole. There are 2 or 3 light spider trail around the centre hole also. The text is excellent with no fading.

Side 2 condition:

Side 2 plays through again beautifully with a little background noise throughout but no sticks or jumps. The transition from each song is wonderful, this is one of the reasons why we love vinyl more than any other format. 8.5/10.

The excellent shine and surface of the vinyl on side 2 is equal to that as described on side 1. There are only 2 or 3 light lines and it is beautifully clean with no grease marks or dirt. 8/10

The Vertigo swirl label on side 2  is in excellent condition, 8.5/10. There is no fading evident with only 2 or 3 light spider trail close to the centre hole and a little discolourationin the same area also. The text remains visually strikingly bold with no obvious fading.

The Vertigo swirl inner sleeve is in excellent condition with a bit of discolouration, no tears, no seam splits and light creasing only.  9/10.

The outer sleeve is in Excellent condition overall with no splits, tears or major wear. The front panel is beautifully bright and clear of grease, dirt and creases, and the spine is perfectly shaped, how it should be, however, there is the signature of 'Rennie' on the front.

The spine is a near perfect shape with very little fading evident. The back panel is again beautifully clean and bright and free of indentations or dirt. There are no creases or discolouration and the track and credit listings read perfectly. There is very slight perimeter wear but it is only slight. The inner inner gatefold area shows a little discolouration/ light fading but it has a very good plus grading. 8/10 overall.
