Black Swan records are very rare and hard to find anywhere in any condition. If you can find one, most are pretty scratched-up and worn-out. That's not this case with this rare beauty.

Black Swan #2010 - Record plays extremely well with no appreciable surface noise. Could possibly be graded NM except for some very light label scratches as shown.

Jazz historian Rosetta Reitz points out that by the time Ethel Waters returned to Harlem in 1921, women blues singers were among the most powerful entertainers in the country. She called Ethel Waters "a natural ... [Her] songs are enriching, nourishing. You will want to play them over and over again, idling in their warmth and swing. Though many of them are more than 50 years old, the music and the feeling are still there."

Born on October 31st in 1896, Ethel Waters was a popular blues and jazz singer. She recorded this (Black Swan label’s first commercially successful record), and continued to record with the Black Swan Label in Harlem, New York from it's start in 1921 through it's bankruptcy in 1923. In March of 1924 Paramount Records bought the Black Swan label and discontinued it a short time later.

Harry Pace himself was written: "While in Atlantic City. ... I went to a cabaret on the West Side at the invitation of a mutual friend who stated that there was a girl there singing with a peculiar voice that he thought I might use. I went into the cabaret and heard this girl and I invited her over to my table to talk about coming to New York to make a recording. She very brusquely refused but at the same time I saw that she was interested and I told her that I would send her a ticket to New York and return on the next Wednesday. I did send such a ticket and she came to New York and made two records, Down Home Blues and Oh Daddy. This girl was Ethel Waters and the records were enormously successful. None of the other records ever measured up to the Down Home Blues record."
