The Band
Super Group members: Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker - both from Cream [Jack Bruce, RIP - Oct. 2014], Steve Winwood from Traffic, and Rick Grech from Derek and the Dominoes.
This is a superb album from great artists. It rocks, but also is very relaxing in parts. A must for any one who wants a thorough classic 60's rock & roll collection!
Recording and Issue Details
- Half-speed mastering*, on High Definition Virgin Super vinyl** from the Original Stereo Analog Master Tapes, made by the Victor Co. of Japan, Ltd. Distributed by Mobile Fidelity.
- Limited to 5,000 pressing, and only 500 records per "stamper" (metal master that creates the vinyl record), so LE numbers closer to 0001 are not as important.
- Number 2145 - the one you are buying is the 145th pressing from new stamper #5!
- These are as close to the analog Master tapes as it gets!
- Not every MFSL record was a Limited Edition.

You will notice from my pictures that there is Scotch tape at several points perpendicular along the closed seam. This was done to prevent the accidental seam opening of the rather inexpensive clear vinyl covering used on all of these Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs Limited Edition records. I cannot show this in close detail with my camera. You can be assured it is in fact sealed.
So, here is a chance to buy a pristine master recording!!! Better sound than the MFSL CD of same title!
Please note: I cannot accept a return on a sealed record. Rarely does a MFSL record have defects. In some cases, there may be a pop or two. These will most likely disappear as you repeat play any MFSL record. MFSL suggests it is helpful to play a recording a few times before your presume there are any defects. In the day, claimed their vinyl eventually will "groove" with your particular cartridge's needle. They will become more as "one" the more you play, until the two (paraphrasing) "become as one".

* Half-speed Mastering
MFSL was the first record company to make Half-speed Mastering a standard practice for all of its LP releases. MFSL LP's are pressed from disc lacquers cut at 1/2 normal playing speed. This was not a new concept however. The UK Decca Records label had used the same process on many stereo classical music LP releases between 1958 and 1967. MFSL revived the practice, refined it, and made it the company's major selling point. It is a time consuming process that also presented technical challenges, so its use was never common or widespread, despite sonic advantages. Sound is transferred from tape to disc with both the master tape and the disc cutting lathe playing at half speed. For instance, a 30 inch per second (IPS) speed tape would be played at 15 IPS, while the lathe is running at 16 2?3 RPM (when cutting a standard 33 1?3 RPM LP). Half-speed Mastering allows for extended frequency response and better transient attack.
** Supervinyl
Early MFSL titles were pressed by JVC in Japan on virgin "SuperVinyl". JVC originally developed this proprietary plastic compound in the early 1970s to reduce record wear on discreet CD-4 Quadrophonic LP records which were introduced in 1972. Supervinyl is a harder and more durable vinyl than traditional formulas. These pressings exhibit a very low surface noise, as well as fewer pops and clicks. Supervinyl remains a proprietary JVC technology and production of this material was discontinued in the late 1980s.
I was told that it was not possible to produce this type of vinyl within the US borders. If you hold it up to the light, the are semi-transparent - a sort of licorice hue. (:}
