This classic UK original LP features the very best of British jazz men, incl. Ian Carr on flugelhorn, Daryl Runswick on bass, & n Mr Harold McNair on flute and tenor sax; all accompanied by the lovely Ms Blossom herself vary ably on piano and vocals. The track that has resulted in this rarity being such hot property from London to Tokyo is, of course, the drum-heavy club-funk monster, ‘I like London in the rain, though in truth the whole album is fab oozes quality from start to finish. A rare record that’s impossible to turn up nowadays, especially in such excellent condition – this one has belonged to me for 34 years and has been carefully looked after!

That's Just the Way I Want to Be, recorded in 1970, is one of Blossom Dearie's rarer sessions. The New York cabaret singer adapted pretty well to changing times, stretching out on atmospheric songs that sound familiar to any fans of singer/songwriter or folk-rock forms. The title-track opener is a good start, her own composition (one of nine here, most of them collaborations) and one that nicely illustrates her outsider status -- a plus, as far as rock audiences were concerned. Brian Gascoigne's floating arrangement makes good use of vibes and flute, and his charts wisely stay out of the way, except on one dated arrangement for Dearie's "Long Daddy Green" (it has the same muddy sound as the spots for Schoolhouse Rock, which Dearie contributed to). Elsewhere, Dearie finds common ground with Joni Mitchell ("Both Sides Now"), and also sings tributes to (presumably) her favorites among British rock singers, "Sweet Georgie Fame" and "Dusty Springfield" (both probably owed a small debt to her as well). Completely out of print for decades, That's Just the Way I Want to Be was ressurrected in full for use in a Japanese collection, Whisper for You. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide

I was originally turned onto this incredibly funky jazz song by DJ Monk One's Monk's Dream from last year. It's such an aberration: a breakbeat laced production on a remarkable vocal album by the fantastic Blossom Dearie. Did the rhythm section just decide between themselves, "screw this loungey stuff, let's kick it funky?" This isn't about to make Marva Whitney seem tame or anything but hey, apparently Blossom Dearie can bloom into a soul sister for a song.
