D.C. Bender (1919 - 1982) by Texas Blues Project
Dick C. Bendy, known to the Texas Blues community as D.C. Bender, was born in Urbana, Texas, a town so small its highest population was once 25 people.
Bendy, as did many others, made his way to Houston and joined the music community.It may be at this time that he adopted his alias of D.C. Bender. His earliest listed recording was done for Gold Star Records in June 1949 (Gold Star 661, Rebob Blues/Happy Home Blues). Yet, he didn't record it under Bendy, or even Bender, but under the pseudonym D.C. Washington.
His later recordings were done mainly as a sideman with such acts as Big Son Tillis, Calvin "Loudmouth" Johnson, Mable "The Wiggle" Franklin, and the obscure Big H(ouston) Williams. Bender also worked with Mike Leadbitter, of the highly important Blues Unlimited journal out of England, with the recordings eventually released on the Sunnyland label.
Sheldon Harris' "Blues Who's Who" indicates Bender also worked with Lightnin' Hopkins, Smokey Hogg, and, again, the unfortunately now obscure, Luther Stoneham. Bender would continue performing up to his death in 1982 from tubeculosis. His death certificate lists him as being buried in Good Hope Cemetery near Goodrich, TX. The name has since changed to New Hope. Sadly, Bender lays in an unmarked grave.
