Great White Wonder, or GWW, is the first notable rock “independently released” album, released in July of 1969 and containing recordings by Bob Dylan. It is also the first release of the famous record label Trademark of Quality (or TMQ). Several of the tracks present here were recorded with the Band in the summer of 1967 in West Saugerties, New York, during the informal sessions that would go on to produce Dylan's 1975 album The Basement Tapes. It was the first time that these previously unheard of recordings came to the market; many more would be released in similar formats over the coming years. Much of the other material consists of a recording made in December of 1961 in a Minnesota hotel room (referred to as the "Minnesota hotel tape"), studio outtakes from several of Dylan's albums, and a live performance on The Johnny Cash Show. The album was nicknamed the "GWW" due to its original pressing's plain white sleeve. Newer pressings contain the name stamped on.
In 1970, the U.S. Label 'Contraband' ... also known as 'CBM' ; released what is possibly the first “independently release” to have a printed cover (gwa 1Ad). This LP has that insert with a 1965 Daniel Kramer photo along with the song titles. It was pressed on black vinyl with white GWW labels in red ink (see photo).
Purchased by me at Reznick’s Records in 1970. This issue had the printed “sleeve” that was stuck under the shrinkwrap of the plain white sleeve (see photo and description of actual sleeve below).
A rare double LP album in a plain white sleeve with no original markings, it, is one of the most famous independently produced album of all time. This is the first independently produced album ever to be issued in the rock-and-roll era. "Great White Wonder" was originally released in the United States in July 1969. Tracks came from Dylan's and The Band‘s legendary Basement Tapes sessions, recorded in the cellar of The Band's upstate New York home, while others were supposedly taped in Minneapolis on December 22, 1961. The recording was never approved by Dylan or his record company. It's easy to overlook this plain looking album while digging through record bins, but if you find it, you own a rare gem.
Condition: Plain white cover where someone has written title and artist on front in black marker and listed songs on back cover informative notes. No split seams. Wear rings as befits a 40-year old plain white cover. Tape on corners.
Vinyl: VG+, scuffs and scratches that do not significantly affect play.
