Description

original Jamaican reggae 12" 45 produced by Lee Perry: Lee Perry & The Full Experience "Disco Devil" / Bob Marley and Wong Chu "Keep On Moving" (Upsetter records)

Original twelve inch single
LEE PERRY AND
THE FULL EXPERIENCE
DISCO DEVIL
BOB MARLEY & WONG CHU
KEEP ON MOVING
Jamaican Upsetter pressing

The best and most bombastic Lee Perry twelve inch ever with one side extending the "Chase The Devil" rhythm by Max Romeo as Scratch blasts the "Disco Devil" while the flipside takes Bob Marley & The Wailers' "Keep On Moving" on to a whole new level. Both sides subdivide and blindside you with heavy echo dubs while splitting into even more dimensions than an atom in a linear accelarator. No one can touch what Perry does on these two tunes. Read my Scratch liner notes and hear & see my Lee Perry interviews at midnightdread.com for more from The Upsetter & Midnight Dread. The ORIGINAL 12" Jamaican Upsetter vinyl is in excellent, near mint condition. It has no skips, no scratch, no surface noise and no hand-writing anywhere. In its ORIGINAL 'Disco Devil' stickered sleeve in VG+ condition with no seam splits (see photo). On the bottom of the backside of the sleeve is small 'Black Star Liner, Amsterdam'. Produced and copyright 1977. Made in Jamaica. "Back In Jamaica (after his "Punky Reggae Party" sessions with Bob Marley in London) Lee Perry pressed on with other excessive 12-inch disco mixes...the sound was explosive, like the booming of a musical bomb...'Disco Devil", an inspired re-working of Max Romeo's 'Chase The Devil' that Perry sang himself. Scratch used the rhythm as a platform to repel the negative aspects of the disco dance craze, suggesting that the fashion-conscious 'Hustlers' give their unwanted cocaine to the Pope, instead of seeking to corrupt the natty dreads through licentiousness. The song was given a more rounded feel through the harmony vocals from Full Experience, then a duo comprised of Aura Lewis and a black American dancer named Pamela Reed... on the B side was an extended mix of the Wailers' 'Keep On Moving', which began innoucuously enough; aside from a few honking bars of Dennis Campbell's sax, nothing much seems amiss until halfway through the song, when the rhythm is stopped and abruptly re-started. Then out of nowhere deejay Wong Chu, selector of Tipper Tone sound, bursts in through a wildly excessive haze of delay to deliver a bewildering toast about all things straight and twisted. When the rhythm runs out, Perry starts it up for a third time, to segue into a dub-cut punctuated by echoing vocal stabs and horn blasts frozen by the infinite reaches of the Space Echo. This scarce nugget provided a rare glimpse of just how hard and 'rootical' the Wailers rhythms could become when re-shaped by the words of a talented toaster, though as ever it is Perry's boundless mixing that really gave the disc its outstanding qualities."-David Katz in his boffo book PEOPLE FUNNY BOY, The Genius Of Lee "Scratch" Perry
