Bob Mould - Workbook, Virgin 209 938-630 LYRIC INNER
In typical Mould fashion, Workbook runs hot (the grinding “Whichever Way the Wind Blows”) and cool (the breezy instrumental, “Sunspots”). But the record’s always brazenly emotional. Prime territory: anguish and regret. Of course, the playing throughout the album is excellent and engaging. So are his soaring, harmonized vocals. And while Husker-like chops are still on display (“Wishing Well” and “Whichever Way the Wind Blows”), they don’t dominate the music. Here, Mould’s is a different kind of brute strength. It’s called brutal honesty. So, the man’s got a heart. He admits it. And then he celebrates and laments it in his music and lyrics, even waxing psalmist on “Sinners and Their Repentances” (“I see the errors of my/oh-so-humble ways”). I mean this guy’s dealing with some major demons in his life and he just comes out and tells it like it is, sleeves dripping blood, as on “Brasilia Crossed With Trenton” (“Big credit cards, they don’t matter anymore/’Cause I can’t pay any money that I owe”) and “Poison Years” (“It’s all that I can do to get up off the ground/Pull myself apart again”). No wonder people love him. Dude’s a walking soap opera—one that rocks.

Vinyl: NM. Looks like it just came from a retail store and it was opened for the first time. The finish is shiny, with no visible defects. Labels are superb, clean and bright without marks. Spindle shows no sign of wear. And no warps.
