For all of you Bob & Doug Fans this is a real treat!
The LP was signed for me on the day the album was released in the US!
Here’s the back story … I was working for a catering company in New York City and was assigned to a job at Polydor Records. As usual, I had no idea what the event was for. I set up about 20 chairs and placed the small buffet table at the rear of the room. The party was to start at 2PM so I unpacked the food and drinks waiting for the guests to arrive. Shortly after a load of people walked in with microphones and cameras. Everybody sat down as the food and drinks for later. I was completely blown away when Bob and Doug McKenzie walked in and took a seat at the front of the room. Turns out this was the official release party to introduce their first record in the United States. It was already a huge hit in Canada. Both were in full costume and ready to keep in character and answer questions, it seemed that nobody really knew who they were and what this was all about!
I’m a Canadian, recently married to a US citizen (for love not a green card) and a huge fan. After a few minutes of introductions and very few questions, the rooms seemed to die down. It was really uncomfortable as nobody was talking, so I decided I would jump in. I grabbed a plate of Back Bacon which I had laid out on the buffet earlier and walked to the front of the room and asked if they wanted a bit to eat. BINGO! That was it! They jumped into a riotous routine and had the entire room laughing. The press loved the comedy and they had more questions which kept the momentum moving. After the usual press kits were handed out and everyone left, I found myself with the two of them and grabbed this LP of the press kit table and asked if they wouldn’t mind signing it. It was later that I discovered the fabulous record sleeve and the official promo photo inside,
As you see from the photo, staying in character, they both signed it with Bob wrote “G’day Thanks” while Doug wrote “Thanks for the back bacon”. Great memory for me!
It’s now time to pass on my treasure to another fan to treasure!
Side note – while they we’re signing, I leaned over and said – you know you two are exactly like so many guys in knew back home in the small town I grew up in – they answered with “where do you think we got all this material?”
