Stick-Up! is an album by the jazz vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, released on the Blue Note label in 1968. The album is Hutcherson's first without drummer Joe Chambers. Billy Higgins took over on drums on the recording session. It also features Joe Henderson and is the first recorded meeting of the vibrist and pianist McCoy Tyner. Five of the six tracks are Hutcherson compositions, with the exception being Ornette Coleman's "Una Muy Bonita".
One of Bobby Hutcherson's most groove-oriented albums, "Stick-Up!" finds the vibraphonist reigning in his more avant-garde proclivities and playing closer to mainstream Hard Bop than at possibly any other point in his career, resulting in a highly rewarding set that ranks among his very best releases. Of course, just because the structures are more defined and the rhythms are more swinging doesn't mean Hutcherson has abandoned tonal depth or complexity, as there's still plenty of forward-thinking ideas at play here, it's just that, perhaps due to the absence of his usual collaborator Joe Chambers' more free-jazz oriented influence, Hutcherson seems more disciplined than usual, foregoing the experimental flavor of some of his earlier releases in favor of a more rhythmically focused and melodic approach. Feauring an ensemble playing with precision and energy on a set of tracks that are consistently among the most streamlined and tuneful of his career, "Stick-Up!" is definitely one of Hutcherson's best and one that, while lacking some of the adventurousness of his other 60s releases, more than makes up for it with how irresistibly catchy and swinging of a set it is.
