KARISHMAA

Music : R.D.Burman
Mint Unplayed Vinyl

Karishmaa is a  marvellous album as a followup to SANAM TERI KASAM. R.D.Burman went overboard with this number - this was sheer self-indulgence. In fact R.D.Burman and Gulshan Bawra's friendship resulted in many such fun ventures - which really would not have suceeded with any other music director.

As Karishmaa was a follow up to Sanam Teri Kasam - which was musically a grand hit. So Barkha Roy (Producer of the Film), R.D.Burman, Gulshan Bawra, Reena Roy and Kamal Hassan came together for yet another hit. They selected a proven hit movie from the south called TIK TIK TIK - which was a huge suspense thriller starring Kamal Hassan and Madhavi - directed by BhartiRaaja (another R.D.Burman loyalist). It is unfortunate that the music of the album was picked up by a company named Oriental which was trying to make it big in the Bollywood Music scene. Unfortunately like any other smaller company, it lacked the marketing machine to push this album through.

Unfortunately the movie tanked, the music was not popularised much - and tanked too then.

In fact we lost one of the most romantic numbers - 'Teri Nazar Se Meri Nazar Ka'. And the fantastic pahadi 'Jaan Meri Tere Liye' or the naughty Nasir Hussain style - 'Khol Doongi Dil Ka Taala'.

R.D.Burman provided the peppy upbeat numbers with some mind-boggling innovations in this album like what he did for the Nasir Hussain banners.Karishma showcased R.D.Burman's toying with musical instruments as per his sweet will in 80s. Absolute wantonness in his cavalierly documentation of what he could do. A transition when the electronically generated sound was slowly and steadily making an inroads and his swagger in his use of Base guitar whip-lashing and dynamite explosion with drumsticks. The song EK HASEEN LAKHON MEIN just triggers the flow of adrenaline when Base and Drums hold hands with parrum pum parrum pam and sensational voice interplay of Asha ji and Annette. In TERI NAZAR SE MERI NAZAR, apart from the hihats and toms, the sound that hits the head is that of bass guitar.See how Asha Bhosle's voice gets a sheen with the progression in bass guitar.

"Ek Haseen Gulbadan" was picturised to promote Barkha Roy's boyfriend of those days Mahesh Anand. He even had a itsy-bitsy role in this movie. This song is the pick of the lot. The use of percussion and the progression in this song is mindboggling. Truly the entire album is an underrated gem and this particular number is a percussion feast.
