The James Upton Ltd front laminated Sleeve is in VG+ Condition, the plain inner is in VG+ Condition & the Record is in VG+ Condition. Description
Original UK London/Stax purple label mono press.Originally formed as the house band for Stax Records in Memphis in early 1962, a 17yr old Booker T. Jones and 20yr old Steve Cropper were jamming in the studio after a session for Billy Lee Riley fell through. The head of Stax Jim Stewart was in the booth and pressed record and then asked if they had any more tracks, so they played another riff they had called Funky Onions! The single of Behave Yourself/Green Onions was released in May and went to number 3 in the USA, being re-issued again in August, before finally appearing on their debut album in October 1962. This is the first issue of the album, originally released on the London American Series by Decca in the UK in 1962.
This is the original issue with the rough purple London labels, with the earliest 3-A 1-A matrices and the 1-I 1-H stampers of the very first presses.
The James Upton Ltd front laminated sleeve is intact & in VG+ condition, with some light corner/edge wear and some light laminate rubbing/creasing on the front cover, with some light storage rubbing & discolouration on the unlaminated rear. The spine is intact, with some laminate lifting along the spine and fully readable, the plain company inner is intact, but is lightly discoloured & in VG+ condition. The record is in visually VG+ condition, with quite a few faint sleeve removal hairlines and several needle marks/scuffs, with some areas of bag scuffing visible on each side. The labels are in EX condition, clean & bright with evidence of a few faint spindle markings on each side. The sound reproduction is VG+, with definately no skips, sticks or jumps, but there is some background noise during the run in grooves, in some quieter passages and some low clicks and pops occasionally in some passages caused by the needle marks.
Overall, still a really good listen, that plays much better than it looks. The matrix nos. are; AML-2556-3A stamper 1-I, AML-2557-1A stamper 1-H. This is one of the early copies of the original 1962 UK mono issue of this album!
