ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This handsome, liitle-known, and extremely rare LP from Hispavox / Le Chant du Monde (HC 4001, Spanish pressing, red/gold label, mono – no stereo edition exists) features the brilliant and enigmatic conductor Ernest Borsamski the RIAS Symphony Orchestra, Berlin in a searing account of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 in D minor Op. 47, recorded in 1949.
Little is known about Borsamsky today – wrote Peter Gutmann online at the superb website classicalnotes:
"[Borsamsky] was concertmaster of an orchestra in the Balkans and was invited to Leipzig by Abendroth, who had met him while on tour. Borsamsky conducted throughout Germany, including Berlin, Cologne and Frankfurt, and for a time was based in Brussels. He specialized in French and Russian repertoire as well as modern Belgian and Polish music and garnered glowing reviews for "his sense of color, attention to detail and vital, energetic direction." However, even in this account some mystery remains – the researcher reported that he could find no further evidence of Borsamsky's existence after the early 1950s."
One can only hope Tahra will turn its hand to a systematic re-issue of Borsamsky's recorded legacy, which is larger than is commonly supposed.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD++. There is minor bumping at corners and slight edgewear, but that is all. There are no bends, seamsplits, or owners' markings, and the album remains solid, bright, and very attractive in appearance – in all, a very good collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is VERY GOOD++. There is audible surface noise, but nothing that overwhlems the music. This surface noise is, I think, largely attributable to the original source and not to any wear on the vinyl’s surfaces. Much detail emerges with great clarity – the harp, the pizzicato strings. If one judges it as an ‘historical recording’, which really it is, the sound is quite impressive. However, those requiring flawless or near-MINT surfaces are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as a very good collector's copy.
