ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful LP – a superb collector's copy – from Nixa (NCL 16004, English pressing, red/silver label, laminated flipback jacket) features conductor Sir Adrian Boult and the Philharmonic Promenade Orchestra (pseudonym for the LPO, adopted for contractual reasons) in a magnificent all-Brahms program, sumptuously recorded at Walthamstow Assembly Hall, London, on 14 April 1955.

Variations on a Theme by Haydn Op. 56a "St. Anthony"
Alto Rhapsody Op. 53
> with Monica Sinclair, contralto and the Croydon Philharmonic Choir
Academic Festival Overture Op. 80
Tragic Overture Op. 81
Boult was a great Brahmsian, a composer close to his heart, and at the end of his life made a richly burnished and potent Brahms cycle with the London Philharmonic Orchestra for EMI. These earlier performances have much to commend them, imbued with an ardor even more intense and a tremendous sense of occasion, the whole given warm and spacious sound.
Incidentally, the outstanding cover art was executed by Roderick Laing, and there are insightful liner notes on the reverse side fo the jacket by Reid Guillamore, printed in English only. Also included are the vocal texts for the Alto Rhapsody Op. 53, both in the original German and in an English translation.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. There is slight curling at the open edge of the jacket, but that is all. Otherwise, the album appears almost as new. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects, and the jacket remains perfectly solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, this rates as a truly fine collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although the surfaces are not absolutely silent, really this is a fine copy and the playback is enjoyable. Those requiring a flawless or near-MINT copy are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this is an excellent collector's copy.
