Description

Bowie - Man Who Sold The World US Cartoon cover - MEGA RARE ORIGINAL.

This is an ORIGINAL, first issue (not counterfeit) due to the stamped matrix numbers. It can also be identified as an original by the shorter distance between the speech bubble ('OH BY JINGO') and the last line of the lyric: "So softly a superego cries (second time dies). Counterfeit copies have a much larger space between these two elements of the back cover sleeve.

This, the US version, was the first Man Who Sold The World to be issued (even before the UK) and Tony Defries (Bowie’s manager at the time) was creating hype to DJs, journalists etc that this record had sold 50,000 copies in the USA. The reality was that only 1,395 had been sold! It had been a flop! Armed with this information, RCA then cut the print run of the UK (dress cover) of this album to around 500 copies (which is what that is now so rare).

This one comes has the top and bottom part of the outer sleeve taped up with white repair tape and on the label (side 2) has a stamp of 'Everybody's Records' and the US company's phone number. This is a company in Cincinnati, Ohio, and is and iconic US record store (many decades old).

1p minimum bid - no reserve. It will sell for what it's worth.
