redgarnett Store ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This beautiful and rare LP from Columbia Masterworks (ML 4845, US pressing, gray label, mono) features one of the more fascinating titles from the label’s “Modern American Music Series”, this installment showcasing the music of Paul Bowles and Norman Dello Joio.

The exact contents are as follows:

Paul Bowles: Music for a Farce

            David Glazer, clarinet

            Herbert C. Mueller, trumpet

            Elden C. Bailey, persuccion

            William Masselos, piano

Paul Bowles: Scènes d’Anabase

            William Hess, tenor

            Josef Marx, oboe

            William Masselos, piano

Norman Dello Joio: Variations and Capriccio for Violin and Piano

            Patricia Travers, violin

            Norman Dello Joio, piano

All three works were recorded at Columbia 30th Street Studios, New York; the Bowles pieces on 27 May 1952 and the Dello Joio work on 2 June 1952.

These are marvelously inventive compositions and these performances would be difficult to surpass – stunning music-making all around.

Incidentally, the remarkable cover art is credited to Malta. There are superlative liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in English only.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. There is minor wear at corners and a slight bit of shelfwear, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and attractive – a very fine collector’s copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT and the playback is outstanding – a truly fine collector's copy.
