This is the infamous Boy Sets Fire / Jazz Man's Needle 12" on Conquer The World Records. This is the 1st press limited of 500 copies. You will know it's the first press because the vinyl is red and also the silk screened covers are different, Blue one side and Red the other. There were only 500 copies made released in 1996, handscreen by James Marks in the basement of the Hamtramck house the same place where they played and I signed them . This is probably one of the most valuable records that I put out on my catalog. The other difference is the lyrics booket inside is full size not half size. It's mint. Nobody parts with this record. Well ..... much can be said happy and sad. I discovered this band from Jay Palumbo who saw them on tour when Empathy was doing shows. Isn't that correct? So I got them to send me a demo when I was living with Jay Palumbo at the Hamtramck house. They then came out on tour and played my basement a few times and I decided to to do a very DIY record which in my eyes completely represented the band. I had been getting lots of demos and you know I always kept my ear open and made contact with Jazz Man's Needle and I liked what they sent me and thought the pairing was a cool idea. The problem was I had just put out all kinds of records and I was on fire but it was a lot to do in one summer. Those few years at the Hamtramck house were unbelieveable for the label, Culture, Morning Again, Empathy, Nations On Fire, Shoulder, Boy Sets Fire...... I mean it was that 1995-96 era. So money was like really bad at that time I had just put out all these records but this record had to come out as well so I asked the guys from Empathy if they wanted to do a split release so they helped with the first pressing and we had a friend that ran a kinko's and he let us go nuts and make the inserts there late one night. I can almost remember it like it was yesterday and it's giving me chills. I remember hearing the songs they wanted to do on the record but they didn't want "Vehicle" On the record and I absolutely insisted without question this had to be on the record. The vocals had more than a shouting screaming quality as you know Nathan Gray chose to tonefully SING as well as scream. This record in my opinion and that song in particular is probably one of the key pivotal points in the evolution of hardcore punk to what modern day punk kids that watch fuse call screamo that have no clue of it's lineage. So is it a stretch to personally say that my choice to sign this band and to insist that this song be included on the record in so that I have my fingerprint on the entire subgenre of music for the past nearly 20 years? Maybe. It's a story I tell people from time to time.
