Brief Artist & Album Info: "Boz" Raymond Burrell was born on August 1, 1946 in Holbeach, Lincolnshire. As a teen in the 1950s, he began playing rhythm guitar for the Tea Time 4, a group formed with his school pal Bernie Rudd. They both acquired a passion for jazz and enjoyed acts such as Mose Allison, John Coltrane, and Charlie Mingus. By 1963 Burrell became the vocalist for The Tea Time 4, an R&B/Jazz quartet with a reputation of Upstaging the acts for whom they opened. Lineup changes were inevitable but success came with a move to London in 1965 at the suggestion of manager, Jack Barrie. With the addition of Ian McLagan on keyboard and a name change to Boz People, the group secured a contract with EMI's Columbia label.

Burrell's style leaned more towards Jazz, whereas McLagan was into Booker T, four singles being recorded and backing band slots with Kenny Lynch and Elkie Brooks. However, with little commercial success McLagan soon left to join The Small Faces.

Burrell next enjoyed a short stint in the soul band, Feel For Soul, back in Norwich from 1966 until the following year. In late 1965, Burrell was briefly considered to replace Roger Daltrey in The Who.

In 1968 Burrell recorded a cover of Bob Dylan's" Down In The Flood" released as a single simply as 'Boz'. He was joined by organist Jon Lord, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and drummer Ian Paice, who formed Deep Purple at the same time, and bassist Chas Hodges, later of Chas And Dave fame. Burrell later appeared on Centipede's Septober Energy in (1971).

CONDITION

Labels: The  Columbia Green & White Labels are both in Superb condition with Hardly any signs of Spindle Wear or Spider Marks to be seen. There is no Writing, Label Lifts or Splits. The White A looks absolutely Stunning against the Green backdrop. All of the Black printing Is Readable and Unfaded. This Single has Obviously been very well looked after in both Playback and Storage. You Really would be hard pressed to find a much Better copy of these Labels. I would easily grade them as Excellent!!!!

Vinyl: Plays throughout absolutely Superb with Minimal background noise. There is the odd little Click during Playback but there are no Pops, Skips or Jumps. The record still Retains that glossy sheen though there are Several minimal surface marks and thumbnails to be seen, these in NO way interfere with the Lovely sound quality. This Single plays up to and  beyond its visual grading with hardly Anything of note to fault. It offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear, sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A typical polished production from Derek Lawrence. Minimal surface sound and no tracking issues. This play-grade proved a real pleasure when playing this fast disappearing Columbia  A Label Single. It will prove quite difficult to find a Better copy and merits a Very strong recommendation. I would grade both sides as Very Good ++/Excellent!!!!

Cover/Sleeve: This is (I believe) the Original 1st Pressing Sleeve that was Issued with this Single. There are no Rips, Splits or Tears anywhere. However there Are a few Creases to the Front and Back (but they have Not broken through) and a Previous owner has Written some Initials and Numbers to the Front. There is also something Crossed out on the Inner lip. Baring in mind that this Sleeve is now 50 Years Old and constructed of a very Flimsy paper it has done Very well to Survive at all. This Sleeve is Incredibly difficult to find in Excellent or Better condition simply because of it's design and age. However I would be happy enough to grade it as Good++!!!!

Cover Summary: Not seen often, this one is in Reasonable condition with the to be Expected signs of  age. Any Creases are incredibly Hard to Avoid at the barest minimum. This classic Sleeve should (as described) please many collectors.

Album/Single Played For Grading: I play/grade ALL records I offer before submitting, I also play them in their entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness. I play from the beginning to end. I use a Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge and Linn Lingo, with my Linn system and Forest Totem Speakers. This system is guaranteed  to pick up any distortion or interference within the sound.

Grading: In my opinion I REFUSE to believe that there is ANY record that can be truly graded as Mint, the BEST that could be offered is Mint- (minus)!!!! Especially so from the 50's, 60's, 70's or even up to the present date!!!! Even copies bought new today would have some form of imperfection on the Record or Cover!!!! Under that assumption I will NEVER use the word Mint in any of my descriptions and Mint- is the HIGHEST grade I would ever offer. So I will only from Excellent, Good or Poor with a -(minus), +(plus) or ++(plus,plus)!!!!
